Joey Tan (Singapore, 1997) is a composer and dancer. She has been pursuing a Konzertexamen degree in Composition at the Hochschule für Musik Freiburg with Johannes Schöllhorn since April 2023. She is a recipient of the DAAD Scholarship and a grant of the Kunststiftung Baden-Württemberg. In 2022, she received the DAAD Prize for  outstanding achievements of international students.

Previously, she studied with Peter Ivan Edwards and Martin Jaggi in Singapore. In 2018, upon invitation of the Ensemble Phoenix Basel and with the support of Erik Oña, Joey participated in the Trabant competition in Basel, Switzerland, where she wrote Mix for 14 instruments. This stint was central to her decision to pursue her studies and a career in Europe.

Joey started dancing classical ballet at the age of 3. Her path to music was always through dance. Later, she also explored other genres such as contemporary and gaga. In 2023, she composed Wogen, eins ums andere for dance, flute, clarinet, violin, cello and piano, which was commissioned by Ensemble ö!, in which she also choreographed and danced. Her experience in both fields enabled her to create a work in which the music and dance have a deep relationship.

Joey's pieces have been performed in Austria, Germany, Italy, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Spain, Switzerland, South Korea and USA by renowned soloists and ensembles, such as Ensemble Phoenix Basel, Ensemble Aventure, ensemble chromoson, Ensemble ö!, ensemble recherche, Les Éclats du Son and Max Riefer.

In her free time, Joey enjoys reading and walking.
