Joey Tan (Singapore, 1997) is a composer and dancer. She has been pursuing a Konzertexamen degree in Composition at the Hochschule für Musik Freiburg with Johannes Schöllhorn since April 2023. She is a recipient of the DAAD Scholarship and a grant of the Kunststiftung Baden-Württemberg. Previously, she studied with Peter Edwards and Martin Jaggi in Singapore.

Joey started dancing classical ballet at the age of 3. In these first encounters with dance, she also found her first relationship to music - one mediated through movement. From 2017 to 2020 she was enrolled in Singapore Ballet's pre-professional Scholars Programme. Later, she also explored other dance genres such as contemporary and gaga.

In 2023, Joey created Wogen, eins ums andere, a piece for chamber ensemble and dancer. The piece was commissioned by Ensemble ö! and was composed, choreographed, and danced by her. In 2024, she created now i lay me down to dream, a work for dancer and six musicians, which challenged the notions of ensemble playing and the combination of music and dance.

Being experienced in both fields of composition and dance, Joey questions the relationship between both art forms. Conceiving the music and dance in her works in the same time, she aims to embolden both art forms radically - neither should be subservient to the other.

Joey's pieces have been performed Europe, Asia and North America by renowned soloists and ensembles, such as Ensemble Phoenix Basel, Ensemble Recherche and Les Éclats du Son.
